Gabriel (pbuh) descended to Adam (pbuh) and said: 'O Adam, I have been commanded to give you a choice among three things. So choose one and leave the other two.'

Adam asked him: 'And what are the three, O Gabriel?'

He replied: 'Intellect (Aql), Modesty (Haya), and Religion (Din).'

Adam said: 'I have chosen intellect.'

Gabriel then said to modesty and religion: 'Depart (you two).'

But they both replied: 'O Gabriel, we have been commanded [by Allah] to remain with intellect wherever it may be!'

Gabriel said: 'Then so be it,' and he ascended back to the heavens.
